Return to Rescue

Whether we like it or not, God often calls us back into the space He saved us from. The Great Commission commands followers of Jesus to make disciples of all nations (Matthew 28:19). Quite the broad scope. So how do you narrow down the nations? Where do you find your God-given ministry? Let me offer, it's uniquely where you've been.
I was your typical backward-hat-wearing, sailor-swearing, fraternity-flirt who drank too much. Addicted to anything that would give me a lil buzz. High as a kite, and drunk as a skunk. My dependency on weed and whiskey led me down a very unfulfilling path. There was a hole in my soul (bout Jesus sized) that quick hits just weren't filling.
Over the past two years, the Lord has intentionally moved me away from those habits (well, not the hats). It's ain't been easy, but the daily choice I make to not indulge leads me to find refuge in other things. Praise God, He has freed me from a lot of that dependency.
"This man is my chosen instrument to proclaim my name to the Gentiles and their kings and to the people of Israel." - Acts 9:15
Now, as I consider where to invest my ministry, God is asking I return to rescue. Why? Why would He choose me specifically to witness among addicted young men. Why would the Lord equip me, in particular? I believe it's because I can relate to the youth searching for something to stand on. I have a unique vantage point to see from their perspective.
"These twelve Jesus sent out with the following instructions: “Do not go among the Gentiles or enter any town of the Samaritans. Go rather to the lost sheep of Israel." Matthew 10:5-6
Consider the first evangelists. The twelve apostles were jewish...lost sheep of Israel. Jesus didn't call them into unfamiliar territory as they began their ministry. He brought His disciples to an environment they were accustomed to on their first mission trip. They related to Jewish tradition. It's with like-minded brothers, their message could be received better. Their words, salted with a cultural understanding, were more likely to fall on fertile ears.
“Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God.” - 2 Corinthians 1:3–4
Where has God brought you out of? With what demographic can you relate? You have a light to pass. You have been strengthened to offer freedom for those in your old circumstance. Be attentive to where to the Spirit is nudging you to testify to the goodness of God. Go in peace!
